Available with seven or eight seats, the 2019 Subaru Ascent is a mid-size SUV that comes in four trims. The Volkswagen Atlas is an SUV that's available in 10 editions. Equipped with the turbocharged BOXER engine, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and X-MODE, the Ascent outperforms the Atlas. This Subaru also boasts the EyeSight technology that delivers class-leading safety features.

Performance

A single-scroll turbocharger sits inside the core of the 2019 Subaru Ascent's BOXER engine. This signature powertrain is capable of unleashing up to 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque at threshold levels. Also running on a turbocharger, the 2.0 engine in the Volkswagen Atlas can't produce more than 235 hp. Both vehicles have a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. Standard in every Ascent, the X-MODE improves performance on various surfaces and in different weather conditions. This module works smoothly with the Symmetrical AWD that matches the capabilities of the 4MOTION AWD in the VW Atlas. Therefore, both of these versatile SUVs are ready to embark on off-road journeys. The Hill Descent Control prevents this Subaru from rolling down too fast on steep gradients.

Safety

Subaru's patented EyeSight Driver Assist technology makes the 2019 Ascent one of the safest SUVs on the market. The Pre-Collision Braking generates an appropriate braking force in response to the threat of a forward crash. You can maintain a safe following distance with some assistance from the Adaptive Cruise Control. Thanks to the all-new Assist Monitor, you'll be less distracted while behind the steering wheel. The Blind Spot Detection issues visual indicators in the side mirrors when there's a risk of a side impact. Backing up in the Ascent is made easy by the Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Reverse Automatic Braking. Nighttime trips should be safer when the Steering Responsive Headlights come on. These LED lights work in sync with the High Beam Assist to improve visibility of curved roads and abrupt intersections. Additionally, the Ascent has the STARLINK suite that includes safety and security services, such as the Automatic Collision Notification. The VW Atlas doesn't come close to matching the cutting-edge driving aides of the Ascent.

Digital Technology

The STARLINK multimedia system in the 2019 Ascent has an 8.0-inch diagonal touch screen with tablet-style menus. GPS navigation software by Magellan and TomTom provides reliable guidance for your trips. You'll also see Yelp and other useful applications on the home screen. The premium entertainment channels in this Subaru SUV include iHeartRadio, Pandora and SiriusXM Satellite Radio. Music is played on the 14-speaker Harman Kardon sound system that's tuned for optimum acoustics. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are already integrated into the STARLINK platform. You can also take advantage of Wi-Fi and wireless Bluetooth in this high-tech Subaru. The App-Connect suite in the Atlas doesn't offer as many options as Subaru's signature infotainment system.
