The 2018 Subaru Forester received a few upgrades, but the new 2019 model boasts even more positive changes. Both models get excellent fuel mileage, both have high ground clearance — a very good thing — that sets the Forester apart from most of the competition, and both have a nicely appointed cabin with wonderful outward visibility.

The 2018 Subaru Forester comes with the choice of two engines, the base engine being a 2.5L, four-cylinder that produces 174 horsepower. All-wheel drive is standard and the only option. The 2.0XT Premium trim is powered by a turbocharged 2.0L engine rated at 250 horsepower. Again, all-wheel drive is standard. Both engines are very fuel-efficient, one of the model's best selling points. The 2019 model gets an upgrade of the 2.5L engine, and power output has been increased to 182 horsepower. The 2.0XT model has been dropped from the lineup, but this trim represented only about five percent of sales for 2017-2018. Overall, the Forester performs nicely, and the engine never seems to strain. Because of the great handling and the all-wheel drive, this is an excellent choice for those who will be doing a lot of driving in adverse weather conditions.

Standard Features

The 2018 Subaru Forester base trim comes with a height-adjustable driver's seat, 60/40-split folding rear seatbacks, and a 6.2-inch screen display with the Subaru Starlink technology interface. Bluetooth and a driver information display are also included as is smartphone app integration and a rearview camera. The uplevel trims add on automatic climate control, a larger screen display, and an upgraded stereo system with satellite radio. The 2019 model sees a few upgrades to the interior. These include new screen displays, the DriverFocus facial recognition system that senses driver fatigue, and the choice of Multimedia Plus or Multimedia Navigation systems. The cabin is also larger because the vehicle is longer, and the cargo area can now accept longer items than the 2018 model.

Subaru has been awarded more IIHS Top Safety Picks than just about any other automaker. The Forester is no exception, with the 2018 model getting this award. The increased number of standard safety systems in the 2019 model will ensure a repeat of this award. The famous EyeSight technology is standard on the uplevel 2018 trims, but it will be standard across the trim lineup on the 2019 models. Another safety feature worth mentioning is the reverse automatic braking. All 2019 Forester trims come with adaptive cruise control.

The Subaru Forester is a fuel-efficient, roomy, and safe transport, and the 2019 model gets some exciting upgrades. Call us ahead to schedule a personal inspection and test drive.
