Subaru isn't the first brand name that one thinks about when considering the purchase of a sports sedan. However, the WRX is a worthy competitor in this vehicle segment. With its peppy engine, superior handling, and nicely appointed interior, this compact performance vehicle is sure to delight. For 2019, the WRX gets a few upgrades, all of which are quite welcomed.

The base WRX boasts a long list of standard features, and the uplevel STI version goes all in. Both models are affordable, so they should not be overlooked when comparing sporty compact sedans. Below, a more detailed comparison is offered, and this will help prospective buyers determine which trim is more suited to their personal taste.

Engine and Performance

The 2019 Subaru WRX is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces a total of 268 horsepower. Six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive are standard. The WRX comes with 17-inch wheels and performance tires. There's a Premium version that comes standard with 18-inch wheels. The 2019 STI version gets a larger, more powerful engine. This engine is a 2.5L power source, and the result is 310 horsepower. The STI also features Brembo brakes, 19-inch wheels, and an upgraded suspension system. Six-speed manual transmission is standard, but for 2019, the gear ratios have been fiddled with just a bit. The third gear has been revised for faster acceleration between 30-50 mph. Steering on the WRX and STI versions is superb, with great feedback thanks to the advanced electric-assist system.

Interior Features

The 2019 Subaru WRX comes loaded with appealing standard convenient features. Included are 60/40-split folding rear seats, Bluetooth, satellite and HD radio, a 6.5-inch screen display, and smartphone app integration. The Premium version gets a new 7-inch screen for 2019. The StarLink infotainment system is also standard for 2019, and that's the reason for the bigger screen displays. The STI version not only gets the StarLink infotainment system but also comes with in-built navigation. The STI doesn't come with a sunroof, but it does offer optional Recaro front seats and an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat. The rear seating area inside the WRX and STI trims is spacious and tall thanks to the high rear roofline. Six-footers can get comfortable, something that most competing compact sedan manufacturers cannot boast.

Safety Systems

Every 2019 Subaru WRX and WRX STI vehicles come with front and front-side airbags, rear-seating airbags, stability and traction control, and a rearview camera. New for 2019 is the standard addition of the Subaru EyeSight safety suite. This is welcome news considering the price of this package if purchased as an option. The system is included only on models that can be equipped with the continuously variable transmission, however, so it's important to check out the transmission system on the trim being considered. It's not available on the 2019 STI version.
